Group Chats
Add Cleo to Telegram and Discord group chats. Configure when it responds, which skills it can use, and how fast it replies.
Requirements
Group chats are available on Cleo Pro only. Each group chat counts as one channel towards your 5-channel limit.
Supported platforms: Telegram groups/supergroups and Discord servers.
Adding Cleo to a group
- 1Add the bot to the group — invite the Cleo bot to your Telegram group or Discord server using the platform’s standard flow.
- 2Get a pairing code — open the channel modal on the dashboard and generate a new pairing code.
- 3Pair in the group — send
/pair YOUR_CODEin the group chat itself. Only the person who sends the command owns the pairing. - 4Configure — the group appears on your dashboard with a settings card. Set the trigger mode, allowed skills, and rate limit.
Trigger modes
The trigger mode controls when Cleo responds to messages in the group.
Mention
DefaultCleo responds when @mentioned by name. On Telegram, this includes @username mentions, text mentions, and bot commands. On Discord, this includes @mentions and replies.
Reply
Cleo responds only when someone replies directly to one of its messages. Useful for keeping the bot quiet unless explicitly engaged.
All Messages
Cleo processes every message in the group. Best for small, dedicated groups where you want the assistant always involved.
Allowed skills
By default, no skills are enabled for group chats. Open the group’s settings card on the dashboard to choose which skills Cleo can use in that group.
Only skills and integrations you have installed appear in the list. Skills that are always enabled (like Cron Manager or Config Manager) are automatically available.
Personal data integrations (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Notion) are flagged with a warning badge. Enabling them means group members may see personal data in Cleo’s responses. Only enable these if you trust the group.
Rate limits
Each group has a configurable rate limit that caps how many messages Cleo processes per minute. This prevents runaway usage in busy groups.
The default is 30 messages per minute. You can set it anywhere from 1 to 120 from the group settings card.
When the limit is hit, Cleo silently ignores additional messages until the window resets. No error message is sent to the group.
Managing group chats
Connected group chats appear in the Channels section of your dashboard alongside your DM channels. Each group shows a settings card where you can adjust the trigger mode, allowed skills, and rate limit.
Changes are saved immediately and take effect on the next message — no restart or re-pairing needed.
To disconnect a group, click the trash icon next to it in the channel modal. This frees up a channel slot and stops Cleo from responding in that group. You can re-pair later with a new code.
Tips
- •Start with Mention mode and a conservative rate limit, then adjust as you learn the group’s usage patterns.
- •Keep personal data integrations disabled in public or semi-public groups to avoid accidental data exposure.
- •A DM and a group on the same platform count as two separate channels towards your limit.
- •Cleo uses the same persona, configuration, and skills across all channels. Only the allowed skills list is scoped per group.
